What is a Fat Quarter?
Picture a metre of fabric. Now picture it cut into 4 pieces that are all a relatively square shape. Each of these pieces will measure approximately 50cmx56*cm (depending on the width of the fabric) and each is a fat quarter. A fat quarter is a useful shape for cushion making, quilting and other small craft projects as it gives little wastage. A fat quarter differs from a quarter metre as a quarter metre is cut along the length of the fabric bolt. A quarter metre will measure approximately 25cmx112*cm (depending on the width of the fabric). The above diagram illustrates the difference between fabric cuts.
*Please note that all measurements are approximate, as the width of a bolt of fabric varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.
